Somerset: Somerset was first settled in 1856 by people from Somerset, Ohio. Within a few years, there were several residences, a hotel and general store allowing Somerset to become a trading stop for miners, loggers, and workers from the four lumber mills in nearby Omo Ranch. The first school in Somerset was erected in the late 1870’s as area agriculture began to grow with the arrival of farmers. Nearby Fairplay further contributed to the growth of the area with it’s own store, saloon, hotel, butcher, carpenter, and blacksmith. |
